Through experience in newspaper reporting, vocational rehabilitation, library clerkship, social work and most recently as a Peace Corps Volunteer, I have developed the following:  

Experience

United States Peace Corps Volunteer, Community Health HIV/AIDs Educator, Swaziland, Africa, June 2009 to Present. Provide prevention education, impact mitigation, care and support to those impacted by HIV while living on a traditional homestead in this rural community. Involved in capacity building of community members in leadership roles and with NGO and local government counterparts. Identify services and link community members to Swazi government agencies, NGOs and other resources to assist in empowering cooperatives, identifing markets and providing skills training in sewing, dairy farming and beekeeping.

Assist in establishing Neighborhood Care Points that provide a hot meal and preschool education to orphans and vulnerable children. Organize women caregivers and link them to training in psychosocial support and preschool education for the children at these care points.

Instrumental in securing $16,200 in grants from four funding agencies in support of four rural organizations, three related to income generating projects and the fourth to the NCPs. Teach life skills and HIV prevention to at-risk and under-served populations, including youth and inmates at a women’s prison.

Patient-Family Counselor, 900-hour practicum at Lifepath Hospice (in association with the School of Social Work at the University of South Florida), Tampa, Florida, Feb. 2007 through April 2008. Provided therapeutic intervention, targeting end-of-life issues with patients diagnosed with terminal illness, their families and caregivers.

Editorial Assistant, St. Petersburg Times, Carrollwood Bureau, Tampa, May 2002 to January 2003 (while a graduate student in journalism). Wrote community bulletins, business and entertainment briefs and feature stories while assisting editors and reporters as needed.

Intern Reporter, The Business Journal Serving Greater Tampa Bay, May 2001 to August 2001. Reported on small businesses and business trends. Fourteen stories, two front page, were published in The Business Journal. 

Graduate Assistant, Florida Marine Research Institute, St. Petersburg, Florida, January 2001 to May 2001. Edited scientific articles for the institute’s website. Tutored research scientists in the use of Microsoft editing software. 

Circulation Clerk, USF Tampa Library, July 1998 to May 1999.  Provided frontline library services to university students and staff on a full-time basis while enrolled in academic courses.   

Library Assistant, Pinellas Talking Book Library, Clearwater, Florida, March 1997 to July 1998.  Provided telephone based customer service to subscribers, many of whom were visually impaired or disabled older adults. Maintained client booklists and assisted coworkers in book mailings.

Vocational Evaluator, Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind, Tampa, June 1989 to May 1996. Through testing and vocational counseling, assisted individuals with visual disabilities in identifying vocational goals. Used psychometric and work sample testing to evaluate clients. Interviewed college and technical school instructors on vocational programs and employers on job requirements. Held exit meetings with clients, their significant others, rehabilitation counselors and other service team members. Wrote individual evaluation reports that summarized and integrated test results and recommendations. Also, co-wrote the center’s policy and procedure manual. Conducted statewide training workshops to professionals in the field of blindness on vocational evaluation. Consulted and made recommendations on vocational evaluation services for the state’s Rehabilitation Center for the Blind in Daytona.

Vocational Evaluation Intern, The Physical Restoration Center, Tampa, summer 1989. Conducted vocational evaluations with injured workers. Conducted research and prepared a formal report of the effectiveness of center’s vocational rehabilitation program.

Vocational Evaluation Assistant, Tampa General Rehabilitation Center, Tampa, December 1984 to August 1987. Scheduled and orientated clients to evaluation process, administered and scored testing, and assisted clients in a work endurance program.

Personal Interests

Vipassana meditation as a means of uncovering factors or conditioning that influence personal behavior. Cultural immersion as a means of understanding and appreciating the role of culture in shaping individuals and societies.
